Why Street Homelessness in Madison County Deserves Our Attention

Did you know the official Point-in-Time count for Madison County in January 2024 recorded just 30 people living on the streets? But through Hand Up Housing’s own outreach, we’ve identified over 275 individuals experiencing street homelessness in just a 3-month span. That’s a major gap—and a powerful wake-up call.

At Hand Up Housing, we believe the numbers don’t just reflect a crisis. They reflect people—people who are being overlooked. Our mission is to radically reduce street homelessness in Madison County by combining compassion with action.

We’re not about handouts. We’re about hand ups. That means supporting individuals while also building the skills, structure, and relationships necessary for long-term stability.

While we may never eliminate homelessness entirely, we can shrink the numbers and shift the narrative—with your help.

We invite you to join our initiative, adopt the mission, and help rewrite the future for our neighbors living on the margins.

Together, we’re not just counting people—we’re showing that they count.
